FortisAlberta is a wires services provider that delivers electricity to more than 200 communities throughout Alberta. Based in Calgary, the utility owns and operates the electricity transmission and distribution networks in the south and central regions of Alberta.

Services Provided

FortisAlberta owns, operates, and maintains the electrical distribution system within its service territory, and reads and maintains customer meters. FortisAlberta's rates are regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission. While EPCOR is the regulated rate provider for the FortisAlberta service area, customers should contact FortisAlberta for electrical emergencies, to report street light outages, for questions about their meter, and for adding or disconnecting a service line.

Service Area

FortisAlberta's service territory is in the centre of Alberta (excluding some municipally-owned distribution service areas), marked in blue on the map below.

History

FortisAlberta was incorporated in 2000 as a subsidiary of Fortis Inc., a international diversified electric utility holding company (see below). In 2004 FortisAlberta acquired the assets of Aquila Networks Canada (Alberta), which made it one of the largest electricity distribution utilities in Alberta. Prior to its ownership by Aquila, the distribution infrastructure and service area was owned by TransAlta.

Fortis Inc. is based out of St. John's, Newfoundland. It began as the St. John's Electric Company in 1885. The company has made numerous acquisitions in the past decade:

  • 2004: aquisition of FortisAlberta and FortisBC (Electric)
  • 2007: aquisition of FortisBC (Gas)
  • 2013: purchase of CH Energy Group, Inc. (electricity and gas utility based in New York)
  • 2014: acquisition of UNS Energy Corporation (electricity and gas utility in Arizona)
