Enbridge Security Deposit
As a new customer for Enbridge, you will most likely have to pay a security deposit upon opening your account.
This is standard practice for Ontario natural gas utilities and falls within Ontario Energy Board (OEB) customer service standards for natural gas distributors. Below are the responses to some of the questions that you might have about paying an Enbridge security deposit.
New Account ChargeEnbridge charges a one-time $25 service fee for new accounts, to cover a portion of the administrative costs associated with setting them up.
How Much Does Enbridge Charge for the Security Deposit?
New Enbridge residential customers must pay a $250 security deposit upon opening an account. However, depending on your credit history, your security deposit may be reduced or waived.
How Do I Pay My Security Deposit for my Enbridge account?
Your security deposit for Enbridge will be charged on your first bill. All payments made to Enbridge will be paid towards the security deposit first if it is not already paid in full when the account is opened. You will be denied service from Enbridge if you do not pay the security deposit.
When Will My Enbridge Gas Security Deposit be Returned to Me?
Your security deposit with Enbridge will be returned to you after 12 months of consecutive good payment history. In other words, if you are not late or miss a bill payment you should receive your security deposit after one year. Enbridge will return your security deposit to you with interest, which is based on the OEB approved short-term borrowing interest rate. Unless you close your account, Enbridge will return your security deposit as a credit on your bill. If you choose, you can call Enbridge Customer Service at 1-877-362-7434 to request a refund cheque.
Will Enbridge Gas Waive My Security Deposit?
Enbridge will waive the security deposit for new customers in the following situations:
You sign up for the Pre-Authorized Payment Plan for your Enbridge bill (or agree to do so within the first 60 days of opening your account
Through the Pre-Authorized Payment Plan you continue to receive monthly bills, but the monthly total is automatically withdrawn from your account one day before the due date.
You are able to demonstrate good payment history from another utility
In order to demonstrate good payment history, you must provide a letter of reference from another Canadian electric or natural gas utility. This letter must show at least 12 months good payment history, and must be dated from within the past 60 days. You should send this letter to [email protected], and include with it your Enbridge account number.
You qualify as a Low-income customer
To have your security deposit waived by Enbridge as a low-income customer, you must meet the following criteria:
- You meet the Enbridge eligibility for a low-income customer: Enbridge defines this as a residential customer who has been qualified by a Social Service Agency or Government Agency as having a pre-tax household income at or below the most recent pre-tax Low Income Cut-Off, according to Statistics Canada, plus 15%, taking into account family size and community size, or has been qualified for Emergency Financial Assistance
- You are enrolled in the budget billing plan (BBP - see our page on understanding your Enbridge bill for more information)
- You do not have an account with a financial institution
- Your gas service has not been disconnected because of non-payment in the past two years
