Along with distributing natural gas in Ontario, Union Gas Ltd operates natural gas storage and transmission services from the Dawn Hub, the largest integrated underground storage facility in Canada. It also sells natural gas at the OEB-approved regulated rates to customers within its distribution service area.

Union Gas Ltd also perform meter readings for customers within its service area for natural gas distribution. Readings are typically done once a month. However, if for some reason Union Gas Ltd cannot reach your meter, your meter reading for that month will be estimated. History

Union Gas was founded in 1911 as an amalgamation of three southern Ontario gas distribution companies as Union Natural Gas Company of Canada Limited. Throughout the 1920s and during the 1960s the company expanded operations throughout southwestern Ontario. In 1942 storage facilities were developed at Dawn Township. This would later become the Dawn Hub, one of the largest natural gas storage and trading hubs in North America. In 1958 a new pipeline connected the Union systems to the TransCanada Pipeline.

In 1985 Union Gas became a wholly owned subsidiary of Union Enterprises Limited, a newly-created parent company. In 1998 Union Gas and a fellow subsidiary natural gas distribution company (Centra Gas Ontario) combined to create Union Gas Limited, which gave it a service area that stretched across Ontario from the Manitoba border to Quebec.

In 2002 Union Gas Ltd's parent company was bought by Duke Energy, an energy company based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Five years later, in 2007, Duke Energy created a spinoff that became the parent company for Union Gas Ltd, named Spectra Energy Corporation, whose headquarters are in Houston, Texas.
