History

Just Energy was established in 1997 as Energy Savings Group, and entered the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2001. It specialized in natural gas supply until 2002, when the Ontario residential electricity market liberalized and the company began marketing electricity. The company began to expand into other provinces throughout the 2000s, and entered into the United States in 2004. It entered the Alberta natural gas and electricity markets in 2005. In 2009 the company rebranded as Just Energy Group. The company has made several acquisitions of energy marketing and home services companies in the United States, and in 2012 it listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2013 Just Energy began marketing energy in the UK under the Green Star Energy brand.

Activities

The Just Energy Group is the parent company to the following affiliate brands:

Amigo Energy: a retail electricity marketer in Texas to residential consumers

Commerce Energy: sells electricity and natural gas California, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania

Tara Energy: a retail electricity marketer in Texas for residential and commercial consumers

Hudson Energy: sells commercial energy across North America

Green Star Energy: sells electricity and natural gas to households in the UK

Position in the energy market

Just Energy's acquisitions during the second half of the 2000s have contributed to making it one of the larger energy retailers in North America. Along with selling electricity, natural gas, and home services, the company has diversified into selling green products as well. Just Energy offers a JustGreen product, which allows customers to offset electricity and/or natural gas consumption with renewable energy certificates.

Other notes about Just Energy

In 2008, the company reached a USD 1 million settlement with the Illinois State Attorney General’s Office for a lawsuit regarding misleading sales tactics. In Alberta, three former Just Energy employees were charged with fraudulent practices in 2010. The Ontario Energy Board fined Just Energy $40 000 in 2011 for violating OEB marketing rules. Over the past three years, Just Energy has been the subject of investigations by two forensic accountants in Canada, both of whom have reported the company to be using irregular forms of accounting.
