History
Enbridge Natural Gas began as Consumers Gas, which was established in 1848 in Ontario. The company specialized in local gas distribution and expanded with growing demand for natural gas. In 1995, Consumers Gas was acquired by the Calgary-based IPL Energy. The company was renamed Enbridge Consumers Gas in 1998. 1999 changes in government regulations led to the separation of its home services activities, which were bought by Centrica (Direct Energy) in 2002. The company also renamed that year, to Enbridge Gas Distribution. As of 2013 it counts over two million customers in Canada and the United States
