Stopping Your Union Gas Service
If you are a current Union Gas customer who is moving out of the Union Gas service area, or if you are moving to a home that does not have gas service, you will have to close your account. This is a relatively simple process, and does not cost you anything.
Moving but staying within the Union Gas service area? Submit a Moving form at least three days before your moving day. You will be charged a $35 transfer fee. Find out more about moving within the Union Gas service area
Moving Out
If you are moving out of the Union Gas service area, or to a house with no gas service, you will need to close your account You can submit a form online to close your account. You will need to provide:
- The date that you would like your gas service to be stopped
- A forwarding address (for your final gas bill)
- Registration information for MyAccount if this is your first time logging on (14-digit Union Gas account number, phone number, email address)
You should give at least 3 business days' notice to close your account. If you need to close your account in less than three business days, you should contact Union Gas's Customer Service Line at 1-888-774-3111 (open Monday to Friday except holidays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
On your moving day, a Union Gas representative will come to take a meter reading. You do not have to be home when the reading is done. This reading will be used for your final bill, which will be sent to the forwarding address that you indicated in your Stop Service form.
Your Final Union Gas Bill
Your final Union Gas bill will be sent to your forwarding address. It will contain the charges for the gas that you used, and corresponding gas storage, transportation, and delivery charges, as well as the the monthly charge (for the number of days in your final bill), and credit or a refund for your security deposit (if you have not already received it). If you are on the Equal Billing Plan, your account will be balanced (credited or billed for any difference between your previous EBP installments and your consumption).
Reference Letter
Many energy utilities will waive security deposits if you can demonstrate good payment history. If you are moving somewhere else in Canada and have good payment history (at least 12 months of no late or missed payments), you can ask Union Gas to provide you with a reference letter for your future utility.
Temporarily Stopping Your Service For Construction/Demolition
You should ensure that your gas service has been safely disconnected if you are having demolition work done on your property. You can have your gas service connection temporarily disconnected by calling Union Gas at the customer line at 1-888-774-3111. During the time that your service is disconnected, you must either pay the fixed monthly charge ($21 per month), or pay a reconnection fee ($35).
