Check neighbours first
If streetlights are on and neighbours have power, check your main breaker. If the whole block is dark, it is a grid event.
Protect food & electronics
Unplug sensitive electronics. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed — food stays safe ~4 hours in a fridge, ~48 hours in a full freezer.
Stay warm safely
Layer clothing, use blankets. In winter, let cold-water taps drip slightly so pipes don’t freeze. Never use gas stove or BBQ indoors for heat.
