What ATCO Gas North actually does (and why it isn't your bill)
Alberta has split the natural gas business into two roles, and confusing them is the single biggest reason customers feel lost when something goes wrong. ATCO Gas North is the distributor: it owns the underground gas mains, service lines, regulators and meters across its northern and central Alberta service territory. Its job is to deliver natural gas to your home or business, respond to leaks, install new service lines, and read your meter.
The gas itself, what you actually pay for as gigajoules (GJ), is sold by a retailer. In ATCO Gas North's territory, the default retailer for customers who haven't chosen otherwise is ATCO Energy, the competitive arm of the same parent group. But you can buy from any licensed Alberta retailer (Direct Energy, Just Energy, Encor by EPCOR and dozens of smaller ones). Whatever you choose, ATCO Gas North still owns the pipes that bring the gas.
- Owns the gas mains, service lines, regulators, meters
- Responds to gas leaks and odour calls 24/7
- Installs new connections, reads meters
- Fixed by address: you cannot choose another
- Sells you the gas commodity contract
- Sends the bill, sets the per-GJ rate
- Handles contracts, billing, account moves
- Can be switched any time, no work to the pipes
Where ATCO Gas North delivers natural gas
In plain words: if you live or run a business in the Edmonton metropolitan area or northern and central Alberta, north of roughly the Red Deer line, ATCO Gas North is almost certainly the pipes company at your address. It covers the densely populated capital region plus the resource towns and rural communities stretching to the Northwest Territories border.
- •Edmonton metro: Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove
- •Northern Alberta: Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Peace River, High Level
- •Central rural Alberta north of Red Deer, plus farms and acreages
- •Service area excludes the small communities Apex Utilities serves
- •Calgary metro + southern AB → ATCO Gas South
- •Smaller rural communities outside ATCO footprint → Apex Utilities
- •Municipal gas franchises (e.g. Medicine Hat) run their own networks
- •Co-op gas territories in parts of rural Alberta operate independently

How ATCO Gas North's charges appear on your bill
Your monthly natural gas bill in Alberta has two halves: the commodity half (the gigajoules you used, set by your retailer or the Default Rate Tariff) and the delivery half (what it costs to bring the gas to you, set by ATCO Gas North's AUC-approved distribution tariff). The delivery half breaks down into several line items that look intimidating but follow a consistent logic. Note that natural gas is billed in gigajoules (GJ), not kWh: 1 GJ is roughly the energy of 28 m³ of natural gas.
A fixed amount per month, regardless of consumption. Covers metering, billing infrastructure and customer support. Typically a few tens of dollars per month for residential service.
A per-GJ rate for moving gas over ATCO Gas North's local mains and service lines from the gate station to your meter. The single biggest delivery line on most bills.
A per-GJ provincial levy applied to natural gas distribution. The federal carbon levy on home heating was lifted across Canada in 2024; only provincial-level charges apply at this time.
Small temporary adjustments that true-up past forecasts or recover specific capital costs. AUC-approved. Can be positive or negative, change periodically.
A municipal franchise fee that cities like Edmonton add to the delivery side. Goes to the municipality, not ATCO Gas North.
Federal goods and services tax applied to the full bill (commodity + delivery).
Distribution rates are set by the AUC under a multi-year tariff filing, not by ATCO Gas North unilaterally. The current tariff is filed publicly on the AUC website. Search for the most recent ATCO Gas distribution tariff schedule.
A practical implication: if your retailer is offering a low per-GJ rate, you'll still pay roughly the same delivery charges as any other customer at your address. Switching retailers changes the commodity half of your bill, not the ATCO Gas North half.
Contact details: gas leak line first
Smell gas? Leave first, then call. Do not use light switches, phones or any electrical device inside. For a strong odour, call 911 first.
Customer service Monday to Friday, business hours; 24/7 emergency line for leaks and odours
For non-urgent questions you can also use ATCO Gas North's online channels: the report an emergency page and the corporate site. Account, billing or contract questions go to your retailer, not ATCO Gas North.
Report a gas leak or odour
Smell gas? Leave first, then call. If you detect a natural gas odour (the rotten-egg scent of added mercaptan), the fastest path is to evacuate everyone from the building, then call 1-800-511-3447 or report it via the online emergency form from a safe distance. The dispatcher logs the address, cross-references it with field telemetry, and assigns a service crew.
Get everyone outside. Open doors and windows on the way out to ventilate. Do not flip light switches, use phones, or operate any electrical device inside the building.
Once outside, call 1-800-511-3447 from a neighbour's phone or a cell phone away from the property. Have the address ready. For a major leak, call 911 first.
ATCO Gas North sends a qualified service technician to locate the leak, isolate the service, and assess what repair is needed (curb stop, meter, in-house piping).
Do not re-enter the building until the technician confirms it is safe. Restoration of gas service may require a separate appointment to re-light appliances.
ATCO Gas North reports its safety and reliability performance to the AUC each year. Gas distribution incidents are tracked separately from electricity reliability metrics: the headline indicators are leaks per kilometre of main, mean time to respond to a leak call, and the number of damages caused by third-party excavation. Calling Alberta One-Call at 1-800-242-3447 at least three business days before any digging is the single biggest way to prevent gas damages on your property.
Planned service interruptions for maintenance are normally posted 48 to 72 hours in advance, by mail or postcard to affected addresses. If you depend on gas-fired medical equipment, register that with both your retailer and ATCO Gas North so you receive priority notification.
New gas connection or service upgrade
For a new build, a service upgrade (e.g. adding a gas furnace to an electric home), a temporary construction service, or any work that requires changes to the physical service line or meter, you deal with ATCO Gas North. Start at https://gas.atco.com/ or call 310-5678 (in Alberta) or 1-800-511-3447 (outside Alberta).
The civic address and the legal land description (LSD or quarter section for rural sites).
A sketch showing where you want the meter set, the desired routing of the service line, and any obstructions (decks, driveways, septic field).
The expected appliance load in BTU/hour (furnace, water heater, range, fireplace), signed off by your gas fitter.
Municipal gas permit and a certified Gas Fitter's sign-off once the in-house piping is done.
Standard urban residential. Greenfield mains extensions or remote sites can take longer.
Fixed component + per-metre charge above contribution threshold.
Once the service line and meter are installed, you separately open a billing account with a retailer of your choice (or you'll default to ATCO Energy at the Default Rate Tariff). The retailer handles the contract and the bill; ATCO Gas North handles the connection.
Moving home, transferring or closing a service
In Alberta the move-in / move-out conversation starts with your retailer, not the distributor. Your retailer closes the old billing account, sets up the new one, and notifies ATCO Gas North to transfer the physical service. Most retailers ask for at least 1 to 2 business days' notice; 5 is safer for end-of-month moves.
Give them the move date and your new address. They open the file with ATCO Gas North on your behalf.
1 to 2 business days minimum; allow 5 for month-end moves. Same-day disconnections are rare.
On the move-out date, ATCO Gas North records the final reading via AMR drive-by or manual visit, depending on meter type.
Your retailer issues a closing bill for the period up to the move-out date. New address bill starts separately.
Administrative transfer only. No physical work, no service interruption. Your retailer can usually keep the same contract running at the new address if it's the same household.
Opening a fresh account is required. Most major retailers serve ATCO Gas South and Apex Utilities, so you can usually carry the same brand across.
Gas meters, meter reading and accuracy
ATCO Gas North owns the gas meter at your address, even though the bill comes from your retailer. The meter is the bridge between the two: ATCO Gas North reads it, your retailer bills you for what it shows. Gas meters in Alberta are mechanical diaphragm meters, most equipped with Automated Meter Reading (AMR) for drive-by collection.
Most addresses. The meter logs consumption in m³ and an AMR module transmits the reading when a meter reader drives nearby. No estimated bills if signal acquired.
ATCO Gas North pulls the meter and tests it on a calibrated bench against Measurement Canada's tolerance for gas meters.
Where AMR signal cannot be acquired (remote acreages, snow-buried meters), ATCO Gas North estimates the bill. You can submit a manual reading to true it up.
If the meter reads outside Measurement Canada's tolerance, the test is free and you get a billing adjustment. If it passes, the test fee is charged to you at the AUC-approved tariff rate.

Note: under AUC Rule 002, Alberta distributors are not required to pay automatic compensation for outages. Damage claims are evaluated case-by-case on negligence.
Compensation and damage claims: the honest version
This is the section where every European-style article gets Alberta wrong. Alberta has no automatic, statutory compensation scheme for individual customers affected by a gas service interruption. Unlike the UK's Ofgem Guaranteed Standards (which pay an automatic amount after defined service failures) or EU continuity-of-supply directives, AUC rules only require gas distributors to report their safety and reliability performance each year. The penalty for under-performance flows from the regulator to the distributor, not from the distributor to you.
If your furnace failed to relight after a planned outage, an appliance was damaged by an over-pressure incident, or you incurred a clear loss during a service interruption, you can file a damage claim with ATCO Gas North. The claim is evaluated on negligence.
- +Equipment failure (regulator, meter, valve)
- +Crew error during work on the network
- +Over-pressure incident damaging appliances
- +Unplanned, distributor-caused service interruption
- ×Severe weather (frost heave, ice damage)
- ×Third-party dig-in (excavator hits the line)
- ×Customer-side piping or appliance failure
- ×Planned service interruptions notified in advance
Most home insurance policies cover appliance damage at a low excess. If your loss is meaningful, the insurance route is usually faster than a denied utility claim. Keep dated receipts and photos either way. They're the only basis on which a claim can be evaluated.
Regulator and complaint escalation
If you can't resolve something directly with ATCO Gas North, there's a clear escalation ladder in Alberta. Two bodies sit above the distributor: one regulates, one advocates for you.
Sets the natural gas distribution tariff, reviews rate cases, approves major capital projects and oversees safety reporting. Public proceedings, full eFiling access.
Free mediation for residential and small-business customers between you, the retailer and the distributor. Independent of all three.
Most issues resolve here. ATCO Gas North customer service: 310-5678 (in Alberta) or 1-800-511-3447 (outside Alberta). Retailer contact is on your monthly bill.
If the front line can't fix it, request a written decision. This creates the paper trail needed for the next step.
UCA mediates for free. Most disputes settle at this stage without escalating further.
Last resort. The AUC has formal complaint procedures; for tariff matters, you can file as an intervener in a rate proceeding.
