Distributor vs retailer: the only split you need to remember

In Alberta, the company that delivers your energy is different from the company that bills you. Knowing which is which keeps you calm when something goes wrong and clear-eyed when you compare offers.

Filter by retailer type

Four plan families to pick from. Each has its own logic.

How to find your current retailer in 60 seconds

1
Check your bill

Your retailer name appears in the bill header and on the envelope. The retailer also handles all account, contract and billing enquiries.

2
No contract? RRO is your default

If you never signed a competitive contract, you are on the Regulated Rate Option. The RRO retailer depends on your distribution territory.

3
Call your retailer

Any account or billing question: call your retailer (number on your bill). Outage or leak: call your distributor 24/7 line, not the retailer.

How to switch retailer in Alberta: the 4-step process

Switching takes 10 minutes online and 1 to 2 billing cycles to complete. No work happens to the wires or pipes. The same energy keeps flowing without interruption.

1
Gather your bill

You need your account number, current rate, your distributor name and a recent month's consumption (kWh or GJ).

2
Compare offers

Look at total annual cost (rate x your consumption + monthly admin fee + GST), contract length, and early-termination fees, not just the headline rate.

3
Sign up with new retailer

Most retailers let you enrol online in under 10 minutes. Approve their terms, give them your address, account number and the move-over date.

4
Wait for the switch

The new retailer notifies the wires/pipes company and your old retailer. You get a final bill from the old one, a starter bill from the new one. No interruption.

Cooling-off rights

Alberta gives you 10 business days after signing a competitive contract to cancel without penalty. Use the time to read the full terms, especially the early-termination fee, the rate-change rules and the auto-renewal clause.

Selectra energy expert insights

Compare total annual cost, not just rate

A low per-kWh rate paired with a high monthly admin fee can cost more than a higher rate with no fee. Multiply your annual consumption by the rate, add 12 months of admin fee, then compare.

RRO suits short-term, fixed suits stability

The RRO can be cheaper in low-price months but spikes painfully in high-price ones. A fixed-rate contract trades the chance of a great month for predictability across the full term. Pick based on whether you value certainty or chasing the lowest possible average.

Read the auto-renewal clause

Many fixed-rate contracts auto-renew at month-by-month variable rates when the term ends, which can be far higher than your original locked-in price. Set a calendar reminder 60 days before contract end so you can re-shop or re-sign at a fresh fixed rate.

How many energy retailers operate in Alberta?

More than 60 retailers are licensed by the UCA to sell electricity, natural gas or both to Albertans. This page lists the 16 most-asked-about. Smaller retailers add up to the full 60+.

What is the difference between a retailer and a distributor?

The distributor owns the wires or pipes that physically deliver energy to your address and is fixed: you cannot choose another. The retailer sells you the commodity contract (per kWh or per GJ), sets the rate, and bills you monthly. You choose your retailer and can switch any time. The distribution charges on your bill stay the same regardless of which retailer you pick.

What is the Regulated Rate Option (RRO)?

The RRO is the default electricity rate for residential, farm and small-business customers who have not signed a competitive contract. It is recalculated each month based on wholesale market forecasts and is provided by a specific RRO retailer in each distribution territory: ENMAX Energy in Calgary, Encor by EPCOR in FortisAlberta territory, Direct Energy Regulated Services in ATCO Electric territory, and each municipal utility for its own customers. The RRO is more volatile than a fixed-rate contract.

Can I switch retailers any time in Alberta?

Yes. There is no annual switching window. Most retailers process the change in 1 to 2 billing cycles, with no service interruption (the wires/pipes are the same regardless of who bills you). Read the contract carefully for early-termination fees if you are leaving a fixed-rate contract before its end date.

How do I switch retailers?

Three steps: (1) compare offers (per-kWh or per-GJ rate, monthly admin fee, contract length, early-termination fee, green options); (2) sign up directly with your new retailer's website or call centre; (3) your new retailer notifies the wires/pipes company and your old retailer. You receive a final bill from the old retailer and a new one from the new retailer. No work happens to the network.

Is the cheapest retailer always the best choice?

Not always. A retailer with a very low headline rate may charge a high monthly admin fee that swamps the savings on small consumption. A variable-rate retailer can be cheapest one month and far more expensive the next. Look at total annual cost based on your consumption, plus contract length and termination fees, before deciding. The Selectra comparator does this math automatically.

What is a renewable energy retailer?

A retailer that matches your consumption with renewable energy certificates (RECs) so that the equivalent amount of clean energy is fed into the Alberta grid. Utilities by Kuby, Sponsor Energy and Bullfrog Power are well-known examples. Note: the electrons reaching your home are still the Alberta grid mix; the "100% renewable" claim is about contract matching at the wholesale level.
