Frequently asked questions
How many electricity utilities operate in New Brunswick?
Four. NB Power (provincial Crown corporation) generates, transmits and distributes electricity across most of New Brunswick. Three municipal utilities serve their respective city limits: Saint John Energy, Energy Edmundston, and the Perth-Andover Electric Light Commission. All four are regulated by the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board (NBEUB).
Can I choose my electricity supplier in New Brunswick?
No. NB has a regulated, vertically integrated electricity market — there is no competitive retail layer for residential customers. Your address is served by one utility (NB Power outside the three municipal footprints) and you cannot switch unless you move into another service area.
How do I find out which utility serves my address?
Check your most recent electricity bill: the utility name and logo appear at the top alongside your account number. If you live inside the city limits of Saint John, Edmundston or Perth-Andover you are on the municipal utility; everywhere else in NB you are on NB Power.
Who regulates electricity utilities in New Brunswick?
The New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board (NBEUB) approves rates, reviews revenue requirement applications, authorises major capital projects and oversees service-quality reporting. Public hearings; full document registry at nbeub.ca.
Who do I call for a power outage?
Always your distributor, never a third party. NB Power 1-800-663-6272 (24/7), Saint John Energy 506-658-5252, Energy Edmundston 506-739-2125, Perth-Andover Electric Light Commission 506-273-4959. For a downed live wire or any life-threatening situation, dial 911 first.
