Who distributes natural gas in New Brunswick?
Liberty Utilities (a subsidiary of Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp.) is the sole regulated natural gas distributor in New Brunswick. It serves approximately 12,500 customers across Saint John, Moncton, Fredericton and surrounding communities. Outside the Liberty Utilities footprint, natural gas is not available and homes use electricity, oil or propane.
Can I choose my gas commodity supplier in NB?
Yes for the commodity portion. New Brunswick has a customer-choice program for natural gas: residential customers can sign a fixed-price contract with a licensed gas marketer for the gas commodity, or stay on Liberty Utilities' default rate. The delivery, storage and transport portion of the bill stays with Liberty and is set by the NBEUB.
I smell gas. What do I do?
Leave the building immediately. Do not use light switches, phones, the doorbell or anything electrical inside the building. Once outside and at a safe distance, call Liberty Utilities' 24/7 emergency line at 1-800-994-2762, or 911 if anyone is hurt. Do not return inside until Liberty has cleared the address.
How is a Liberty Utilities NB gas bill structured?
Each bill combines a fixed monthly customer charge, a delivery charge per cubic metre, a load-balancing/storage component, the gas-commodity charge (default rate or your marketer's contract), the federal carbon levy where applicable, and HST. The non-commodity portion is set by the NBEUB.
Who regulates natural gas distribution in NB?
The New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board (NBEUB) approves Liberty Utilities' rates, reviews capital projects and oversees the gas-marketer licensing regime. Pipeline safety oversight is handled by the Department of Energy and Resource Development of New Brunswick and federally where TransCanada/Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline assets cross the border.
