No. NB has a regulated, vertically integrated electricity market. NB Power is both the wires-and-poles distributor and the retailer for most of the province. Three small municipal utilities serve specific city limits (Saint John, Edmundston, Perth-Andover). There is no competitive retail layer for residential customers.
New Brunswick has cold winters and many homes use baseboard electric heat — the least efficient electric heating option. Switching to a cold-climate heat pump typically cuts heating-related electricity use by 40 to 60 %. NB Power's Total Home Energy Savings program and the federal Greener Homes grant can together cover several thousand dollars of the upfront cost.
Depends on your home and your location. Natural gas is only available in the Liberty Utilities footprint (Saint John, Moncton, Fredericton). Cold-climate heat pumps work province-wide, are cheaper to run than oil in almost all conditions, and qualify for both NB Power and federal rebates. Oil prices are volatile; electricity rates are reviewed annually by the NBEUB and move more predictably.
