In most communities you report to the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC); in Yellowknife and Hay River, the distributor is Northland Utilities, with Naka Power involved. Save your community\'s correct 24-hour outage number now, while the power is on, rather than hunting for it in the cold and dark. For a downed line or any life-threatening situation, contact local emergency services first, then report the outage.
A cold-weather outage plan
Prepare before winter; in an Arctic outage there is no time to improvise.

Warm layers, blankets and deep-cold sleeping bags; a hand-crank or battery light and radio; charged power banks; and several days of water and non-perishable food.
Have a heat source you can use safely and know how to operate it. Never run a fuel-burning generator or heater indoors or in an attached garage, and keep a working carbon-monoxide alarm.
Pick one well-insulated room to gather in, close off the rest, and seal drafts to keep body heat and residual warmth in for as long as possible.
Find out about your community's warming centre or emergency plan, and arrange to check on neighbours, especially elders and those living alone, during a prolonged outage.
