Nova Scotia operates a regulated electricity market. Nova Scotia Power, an investor-owned Emera company, generates, transmits and distributes electricity across about 95% of the province; five small municipal utilities serve their own town limits and buy bulk power from Nova Scotia Power.

Eastward Energy (formerly Heritage Gas) is the franchised natural gas distributor in Nova Scotia, serving about 8,500 customers across seven counties including Halifax. Regulated by the Nova Scotia Energy Board.
