How many electricity utilities operate in Nova Scotia?
Six. Nova Scotia Power (investor-owned, an Emera company) generates, transmits and distributes electricity for about 95% of the province. Five small town-owned municipal utilities run their own local wires inside their boundaries: Antigonish, Berwick, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Riverport. All buy bulk power from Nova Scotia Power and all have their rates reviewed by the Nova Scotia Energy Board.
Can I choose my electricity supplier in Nova Scotia?
No. Nova Scotia has a regulated electricity market with no competitive retail layer for residential customers. Note that Nova Scotia Power is not a Crown corporation: it is investor-owned, a subsidiary of the publicly-traded Emera Inc. Your address is served by one utility (Nova Scotia Power outside the five municipal footprints) and you cannot switch unless you move into another service area.
How do I find out which utility serves my address?
Check your most recent electricity bill: the utility name and logo appear at the top alongside your account number. If you live inside the town limits of Antigonish, Berwick, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay or Riverport you are on the municipal utility; everywhere else in Nova Scotia you are on Nova Scotia Power.
Who regulates electricity utilities in Nova Scotia?
The Nova Scotia Energy Board (NSEB), formerly the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (NSUARB). It reviews rate applications and holds public hearings before any change takes effect, and it oversees both Nova Scotia Power and the five municipal utilities. The board is independent of both the utilities and the government.
