Electricity utility (1)

Nunavut has a regulated electricity market with no retail competition. Qulliq Energy Corporation, a Crown corporation owned by the Government of Nunavut, is the single utility for the whole territory.

One utility for the whole territory

There is no choice of supplier in Nunavut. Whatever community you live in, Qulliq Energy Corporation owns the wires, runs the local diesel plant and sends the bill. The simplest confirmation is the issuer name printed at the top of your most recent electricity bill, which will read Qulliq Energy Corporation.

Because the communities are not interconnected, each one is its own small grid. Rates are reviewed by the Utility Rates Review Council of Nunavut, which advises the Minister responsible for the corporation, and the Government of Nunavut subsidises part of residential consumption through the Nunavut Electricity Subsidy Program.
