How many natural gas distributors operate in Ontario?
Two OEB-licensed natural gas distributors serve Ontario. Enbridge Gas Inc. covers roughly three-quarters of Ontario natural gas customers (about 3.8 million accounts across the GTA, Ottawa, Niagara, southwestern Ontario, central Ontario and beyond). EPCOR Natural Gas Limited Partnership covers a small Elgin County franchise around the Town of Aylmer, Township of Malahide and Municipality of Bayham (~9,000 accounts), acquired from NRG in 2019.

This is a life-safety emergency. (1) Leave the building immediately. Do NOT operate light switches, electrical appliances, garage door openers or anything that could spark. (2) From a safe location outside, call your gas utility's 24/7 emergency line: Enbridge Gas 1-866-763-5427 (1-866-SMELL-GAS) or EPCOR Natural Gas 1-877-969-0999. (3) If you cannot reach the utility, call 911. (4) Stay outside until the utility crew has cleared the property.
Can I choose a different gas distributor?
No. Like electricity LDCs, your gas distributor is fixed by your address. If you are inside an Enbridge Gas franchise, you cannot switch to EPCOR Natural Gas (and vice versa). You can choose your commodity supplier (Direct Purchase marketer) to replace the System Gas portion of your bill, but the delivery, transportation, regulatory and HST charges are unchanged.
Who regulates gas distribution in Ontario?
Two bodies: the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is the economic regulator, setting distribution tariffs, approving rate applications and overseeing the scorecard. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is the safety regulator under the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000 and the Ontario gas-distribution code (CSA Z662). For electricity, the comparable safety regulator is the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) — gas falls under TSSA.
What is System Gas vs Direct Purchase?
System Gas is the OEB-set default commodity rate, updated through the Quarterly Rate Adjustment Mechanism (QRAM). Direct Purchase is a fixed-rate contract with a licensed gas retailer that replaces the System Gas portion of the bill for the contract term. The Energy Consumer Protection Act, 2010 banned aggressive door-to-door sales and tightened disclosure rules; Direct Purchase contracts remain a small share of the residential market.
Does Ontario have automatic outage compensation for gas customers?
No. Like electricity, Ontario has no statutory automatic compensation scheme for gas-service interruptions. The OEB requires distributors to report reliability and emergency-response performance in annual scorecards. Damage claims are evaluated case-by-case on negligence and routinely denied for severe weather, third-party damage and customer-side appliance failures.
