Selectra energy expert explains

What a CEP rate-protection contract actually buys you in Ontario

Canadian Energy Protection sits in a specific corner of Ontario's retail energy market: a small, family-owned, OEB-licensed marketer that sells fixed-rate contracts of up to five years on electricity, natural gas, or both. The product is not designed to be the absolute cheapest cent-per-kWh on the market on day one. It is designed to flatten volatility across a 36 to 60-month horizon, while the OEB's Regulated Price Plan (RPP) and Enbridge Gas's quarterly rate move around it.

Why rates aren't on the page

CEP doesn't publish a public rate card. Like most Ontario marketers, they quote prices after a consultation that captures your local LDC, usage profile and contract length. This is normal in Ontario's marketer segment, but it means you can't compare CEP head-to-head on a cents-per-kWh basis against an Alberta-style live rate sheet. Always request a written quote that spells out the energy charge, contract term, exit fees and renewal clause before you sign.

What the contract actually controls

Electricity: only the energy supply portion (¢/kWh), about 30-40% of your bill.
Gas: only the commodity portion (¢/m³), about 35-45% of your bill.
Not controlled: Hydro One / Toronto Hydro / Alectra delivery, Global Adjustment, regulatory charges, HST.
Not controlled: Enbridge Gas distribution, transportation and storage charges.

Bottom line

CEP is a sensible choice for Ontario households who value certainty over a rock-bottom headline rate and prefer dealing with a small, family-owned, Ottawa-based business rather than a national door-to-door brand. Always insist on seeing the full proposed contract, energy charge, term, exit fee, renewal clause, before signing, and remember Ontario's 10-day cooling-off period: you can cancel any new contract within 10 calendar days at no cost, regardless of what the sales agent told you.
