Just Energy Ontario

Just Energy is Ontario's original competitive energy retailer. The company was founded in Mississauga in 1997 by Bosnian-born Canadian entrepreneur Rebecca MacDonald, initially as Ontario Energy Savings Corp., to take advantage of Ontario's deregulated natural-gas market. It added electricity retailing in 2002 when Ontario opened its power market, rebranded as Just Energy in 2009 and grew into one of North America's largest independent energy retailers, serving over one million customers across Canada, the United States and (until later divestitures) the United Kingdom.

In Ontario, Just Energy holds OEB Electricity Retailer Licence ER-2015-0118 and Gas Marketer Licence GM-2015-0119, and sells province-wide through Just Energy Ontario L.P.. Its flagship product is the 5-year "Predict-a-Bill" plan: a flat $49.99 / month fee that replaces variable commodity charges on either gas or electricity, with a $10 / month discount when both are bundled. Customers continue to be billed and physically served by their existing local utility, Just Energy only handles the supply portion of the bill.

The company has had a turbulent regulatory history, including consumer-protection settlements in several U.S. states and an Ontario employment-misclassification class action over its commission-only door-to-door sales force. Just Energy filed for CCAA creditor protection on 9 March 2021 following heavy losses from the February 2021 Texas winter storm, and exited CCAA on 16 December 2022 as a privately held company owned by its former secured lenders. It continues to operate normally in Ontario.
