ONIT Energy Ltd., trading in Ontario as Ontario Wholesale Energy (OWE), is an Ontario Energy Board-licensed electricity retailer (ER-2015-0157) and natural gas marketer (GM-2015-0158) headquartered at 2 Bloor Street West in Toronto. Founded in 2014 and backed by a supply relationship with Shell Energy North America, the company negotiates custom fixed-rate electricity and natural-gas contracts on behalf of Ontario businesses.
OWE positions itself as a "boutique retailer" that brings wholesale-market access, traditionally reserved for very large corporate energy buyers, to small and mid-sized commercial consumers across the province. Customers continue to be billed and physically served by their local utility, ONIT only handles the supply portion of the bill.
ONIT serves more than 44,000 commercial accounts across Ontario, restaurants, retail, automotive, manufacturing, hotels, greenhouses, farms and property-management portfolios, with affinity partnerships through the Hotel Association of Canada, the Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations and other provincial business groups. Contracts typically run one to five years at fixed rates, 100% load-following, with a 90-day cancellation clause.
