Electricity utilities (2)
Prince Edward Island has a regulated electricity market with no retail competition. Maritime Electric, a Fortis subsidiary, distributes to almost the whole Island; the City of Summerside operates its own municipal utility within the city.
How to know which utility serves you
There is no choice of supplier on Prince Edward Island: your utility is determined by your address. If you live anywhere on the Island outside the City of Summerside, Maritime Electric owns the wires and bills you. If you live inside the City of Summerside, Summerside Electric is your utility. The simplest check is the issuer name printed at the top of your most recent electricity bill.
Both utilities ultimately draw on a provincial grid that imports roughly two-thirds of its electricity from New Brunswick across submarine cables. The key difference is regulatory: Maritime Electric's rates are set by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC), while Summerside Electric's rates are set by Summerside City Council.
