How many electricity utilities operate in Saskatchewan?
Three. SaskPower (provincial Crown corporation) generates, transmits and distributes electricity across most of Saskatchewan. Two municipal utilities serve their respective city limits: Saskatoon Light & Power and the City of Swift Current. All three are subject to rate review by the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel.
Can I choose my electricity supplier in Saskatchewan?
No. SK has a regulated, vertically integrated electricity market — there is no competitive retail layer for residential customers. Your address is served by one utility (SaskPower outside the two municipal footprints) and you cannot switch unless you move into another service area.
How do I find out which utility serves my address?
Check your most recent electricity bill: the utility name and logo appear at the top alongside your account number. If you live inside the city limits of Saskatoon or Swift Current you are on the municipal utility; everywhere else in SK you are on SaskPower.
Who regulates electricity utilities in Saskatchewan?
The Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel (SRRP) reviews SaskPower's rate applications and reports to the provincial Cabinet, which makes the final decision. Municipal utility rates are set by their respective city councils. Service standards are overseen by the provincial Ministry of Energy and Resources.
