History

ENMAX's origins lie in the development of the electricity generation and distribution systems in Calgary. In 1905 the City of Calgary Electric System, the first electricity generation plant built by the City of Calgary, became operational. The City of Calgary operated several power generation plants in the following decades, but eventally began purchasing power from a private power generation company (that eventally became the TransAlta Corporation). By 1928 The City of Calgary Electric System stopped generating electricity altogether and focused on electricity transmission and distribution.

The 1995 Electric Utilities Act deregulated parts of the electricity system in Alberta, and in 1996 the City of Calgary Electric System began purchasing power on the province-wide market (now called the Alberta Electric System Operator). In 1998 the City of Calgary Electric System became a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Calgary, named ENMAX Corporation. At this time two subsidiary companies were also created: ENMAX Energy Corporation, for energy marketing, and ENMAX Power Corporation, for transmission and distribution.

ENMAX Inc entered the retail electricity market when it deregulated in Alberta in 2001. In 2003 ENMAX Power Services Inc was established, providing competitive engineering, procurement, construction, & maintenance services throughout Alberta. As of 2013 ENMAX counted 835 000 customer sites and 1,800 employees.
