SPARK Power is a competitive energy retailer that focuses on green power. SPARK Power offers a variety of fixed and variable electricity prices, from both green and non-renewable sources. SPARK power recently merged with another retail co-operative, Northern Lights Energy and Power Ltd., to form Alberta Co-operative Energy (ACE).

About SPARK Power

ACE is a 100% member-owned retail electricity cooperative that specializes in supporting green energy and local development. The retailer offers both non-renewable and green energy options, as well as fixed and variable rates for its members. 70% of yearly profits are reinvested into renewable energy projects, as decided upon by the coop's members.

Organization and Activities

ACE is a cooperative, and owned by its members. It is managed by the Board and Management Team, to which any of its members are entitled to join. 

As a cooperative, ACE members are entitled to a share in annual profits. The precise amount that is redistributed to members is determined by the Board and the Management Team, bearing in mind that 70% of profits must be reinvested into supporting renewable energy.

ACE offers both renewable and non-renewable electricity options. Customers purchasing the green energy option pay a premium that allows ACE to purchase locally generated green energy offsets at $1.85¢/kWh from its own certified green generating facilities. Customers can choose to purchase green energy offsets from a specific generator group, or can become registered themselves as green energy generators (find out more about microgeneration).

SPARK Power is available in ATCO Electric, Enmax Power (Calgary, Red Deer, Cardston, Ft. Macleod, Crowsnest Pass, Ponoka), Epcor Energy Alberta GP Inc., FortisAlberta, and Lethbridge, service territories.

Residential Rates (Non-Renewable Power)

Non Member Residential Rate (With Security Deposit)
Electricity		 6.4 ¢/kWh
  • Minimum $200 security deposit required, to be deposited and maintained in an Interest Account. 2.5% annual interest applied as a credit on the customer's monthly bill starting on the second billing cycle and continuing until the end of the electricity contract.
  • $6.50 monthly administration fee (plus $0.00175/kWh for those who consume over 3286 kWh per month)
  • Contract can be cancelled at any time with no fees with 10 business days' notice by completing and submitting a Contract Cancellation Form

SPARK Member Rate
Electricity		 6.3 ¢/kWh
  • One-time $25 membership fee that is refundable should customers change retailers

Green Power Rates

History

SPARK Power was co-founded by Jeff Senger and Paul Cabaj and began retailing electricity in 2011. In 2015 the company merged with another retail co-operative, Northern Lights Energy and Power Ltd., to form Alberta Co-operative Energy (ACE), the name under which it now operates.
