City of Medicine Hat Electricity and Gas Utilities Service Area
The City of Medicine Hat Electric and Gas Utilities provide service to customers within the municipality, as well as in the surrounding areas, including Redcliff, Dunmore, and Vegreville.
History
With some of the largest natural gas reserves in North America located to the west of the city, Medicine Hat is known as "The Gas City". It began a project to supply residents with natural gas in 1903. The City of Medicine Hat Electric Utility began generating power for residents in 1910. At the time, diesel was used for generation, though now electricity is generated with co-generation turbines with natural gas and steam.
Activities and Organization
The electric and gas utilities in Medicine Hat are owned publicly owned, and overseen by Energy Services, which reports to the City Council. Activities for both Electric and Gas Utilities include:
- Production: The City of Medicine Hat produces both electricity and natural gas for its residents
- Distribution: The Electric Utility distributes electricity to some 300 000 residents of Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore, Vegreville and rural areas that surround the city. The Gas Utility distributes gas at rates regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission
- Energy Supplier: the City of Medicine Hat's rates for electricity and gas are regulated by the city
