Stopping Service (Winter Season)

If you have a property in which no-one is currently inhabiting, you may wish to have your gas service cut off. Enbridge requires written confirmation from you to stop gas connection during the winter season, as cutting gas service during colder may have implications for pipe infrastructure. The Enbridge heating season runs from October 1 to March 31, and to have your gas shut off to your property during this time, you will have to fill out and send a Winter Lock Letter to Enbridge. You will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Account number
  • Service Option and Service Address
  • Date to lock meter
  • Contact Information

Once you have filled out the Winter Lock Letter (which you can find here, you will need to send it to Enbridge, either by post at
Enbridge Correspondence Department
P.O. Box 650 Scarborough, ON MIK 5E3

or by fax, at 1-888-711-1211

You will be charged a $70 (+ HST) reconnection fee if you decide to restart your natural gas connection once it has been stopped.

Temporarily Stopping Your Service For Construction/Demolition

You should ensure that your gas service has been safely disconnected if you are having demolition work done on your property. As the property owner, you can contact Enbridge directly to have your gas service temporarily disconnected, or your contractor, builder, or developer can do this for you. You will need to give some advance notice, as Enbridge requires at least 44 days from the date of receiving your request to the end date of your project.

The steps for temporarily cutting off your gas service are as follows:

  1. Call Enbridge at 1-877-362-7434 to start the process
  2. Enbridge will apply for a permit with your municipality
  3. Enbridge will visit the site and provide a quote for the expected works (which includes materials, labour, restoration, permit, and gas cut-off fees. The gas cut-off fee is regulated by the OEB)
  4. Enbridge will request underground utility locates for the area where work will take place. This takes approximately six weeks
  5. You (the property owner) must provide Enbridge with written confirmation and consent to the charges for cut-off by a specified date. Enbridge will not go through with the work if it does not receive this confirmation.
  6. After receiving the confirmation, Enbridge will contact you (or your contractor, builder, developer) to schedule a date for gas cut off.
