Understanding Your ENMAX Bill
Here we break down the various components of your ENMAX energy bill.
Looking for more general information about your Alberta electricity bill?
Page 1: Summary Page
Here you will find a basic summary of your account information. This page can be divided into five main sections.
Account Information
Here you will find your account number, your address, and the dates of your previous bill and current bill. It is important to verify that your account number is correct, as this is the number that ENMAX uses to bill your account.
Summary of Your Account
In this section you will find the total amount due, as well as the deadline before late payment (ENMAX charges a 3.25% late penalty on any amounts outstanding 28 days after the current bill date). You will also find recent payment history for your account, which includes the amount of your last payment and the date that it was received. If you have any outstanding credits or charges, it will be noted on the balance forward line. If you have paid your bill in full, the amount will be 0. You will also find your new charges for the month, which will be broken down into electricity charges, GST, and the total amount due.
Contact Information
To the right of your account summary, you will find various ENMAX phone numbers relating to your power supply. For general enquiries you can call ENMAX Customer Service at 310-2010 from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., or on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your wires services provider (electric utility) is responsible for responding to electrical emergencies, power outages, and questions regarding your meter reading. If you do not know who your electrical utility is, you can find out in our directory.
Important Notices
Below ENMAX contact information you will see a section for any important notices that ENMAX may have to communicate to you.
Payment Return Slip
At the bottom of your bill is the payment return slip. You need to detach this from your bill and send it with your payment if you choose to pay by cheque or money order. The payment return slip contains your account number, address, and the total amount due. It is important to make sure that your account number is correct, as this is the account to which ENMAX will register payment.
Second Page
The second page of your ENMAX bill contains definitions of items that you will see on your bill breakdown, as well as information on the terms and conditions of your service with ENMAX. You will also find information about your ENMAX payment options.
Third Page
This page provides a detailed description of your monthly ENMAX charges. Depending on where you live and what services you have purchased from ENMAX, this section may contain up to three sections
Electrical Charges
Here you will find the name of your service with ENMAX (EasyMax, Simple, or RRO). You will first find information about your monthly consumption, which includes the number of days billed, your meter number, the code for your rate type, details of your most recent meter reading (including the amounts, the date, and whether it was an actual (A), or estimated (E) read,) your site ID, and the total amount for which you are being billed (in kWh).
Below this you will find details of your electrical energy charges. Here you will find the amount of your consumption multiplied by your ENMAX rate, the administration charge, and the dates for which you are being billed. Depending on your ENMAX plan and your billing cycle, you may be charged at different rates depending on the dates of consumption (i.e. your power consumption at the beginning of the month is charged at a different rate from your consumption at the end of the month). Unlike other energy suppliers, ENMAX administration fees are charged by the day and not a flat rate per month, so this amount can vary depending on the billing period (ENMAX administration charges are about 24ยข per day).
Next you will find the details of your charges for electricity delivery. These are charges that ENMAX passes along to your wires services provider. They are regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and will not change depending on who your supplier is. They will be broken down into charges for power distribution (which covers the costs of building and maintaining the system that brings power to your home), transmission (which recovers costs related to transporting electricity across high-voltage transmission lines to the distribution network), the balancing pool allocation (a rate rider that is a refund from the Alberta Electric Systems Operator), other rate riders, and the local access fee (which is charged by your local municipality to allow your electric utility access to municipal land).
You will find the subtotal of the electrical charges at the bottom of the list. You may have noticed that some of your charges are noted with an asterisk (*). This indicates that this charge is subject to GST.
Gas Charges
If you purchase natural gas from ENMAX, you will find the details of these charges below. They are presented in a similar manner to how ENMAX outlines electrical charges. First you will find information about your monthly consumption, including the number of days billed, your meter number, rate type, and details about your reading (the reading amounts, dates, and whether the reading was A (actual), or E (estimated)). You will also find your site ID, as well as the total amount of gas for which you are being billed (in GJ). The conversion factor (the amount by which your volume consumption is multiplied in order to translate it into a GJ value) is listed directly below your site ID.
Under the heading New Charges are your charges for natural gas supply, which are separated into natural gas energy charges, and delivery charges. Under your natural gas charges you will find the rate at which your energy consumption was consumed. Depending on your billing cycle, your consumption might be split into different rates. If you purchase a variable gas rate you will also see a transaction fee, which is also based on your consumption. The administration fee, which is charged for both electricity and gas, is charged by day, and will be listed with your gas energy charges.
Your natural gas utility's charges (either ATCO Gas or AltaGas Utilities) follow your natural gas energy charges. They may be presented slightly differently, but will include both fixed and variable charges, as well as rate riders. All of these charges are regulated by the AUC. You will likely also be charged a municipal franchise fee, which - like the local access fee - is charged by your local municipal authority for providing access to municipal land for the natural gas delivery network.
Water Charges
If you live in Calgary and purchase power and/or gas from ENMAX, your water utility charges may appear on your ENMAX bill. These services are provided by the City of Calgary.
Fourth Page
The final page of your bill outlines the rest of your utilities charges (if you live in the city of Calgary), such as wastewater and garbage. If you are on a EasyMax rewards plan with ENMAX, you will also find a summary of your points. The final section of your bill is a message centre, where ENMAX will communicate any important information that might affect the terms of your service
